Weight Loss Gimmicks to Avoid

Image
Many people are looking to lose weight and lose weight fast, so they fall for many weight-loss gimmicks.   The best way to lose weight is to change your lifestyle, healthier eating and more exercise.   But a lot of people don’t want to make the effort.   They look for an easy way to lose weight and then try one or more weight-loss gimmicks.   What are some of these weight-loss gimmicks that you should avoid?   Short, 7-Minute Workouts – you have seen these headlines:   Lose weight by exercising only 7 minutes a day.   Any exercise is good for you but exercising only 7 minutes a day won’t lead to weight loss.   If you keep repeating the 7-minute workout and exercise for 21 minutes or more, then the exercise can burn up some calories. Detox and Teas that promote weight loss – I have heard many people say they are on a “detox diet” thinking this is a good thing.   But your liver “detoxes” every day and you don’t need to go on a “detox die...

Fasting – Good for You?

Image
Is fasting good for you?   How long should you fast?   Are there any health benefits to fasting?    A student in my class asked me if fasting is good for you and how long should one fast?   Good questions.   As it turns out, Dr. Oz talked about fasting and how he fasts in a recent article, It’s About Time! .   Dr. Oz talks about how he uses the clock for fasting and for losing weight and also for some good health benefits.   Personally, I am not a fan of fasting.   I tend towards hypoglycemia and going for days without food is not for me.   But, Dr. Oz provides a somewhat new twist on fasting.   More short-term fasting – giving your body a rest from food.   This type of fasting I can do and maybe it is something that will work for you.   In January, I wrote a blog about fasting:   To lose weight, should you count time or calories?      This plan focused on Time Restricted Feeding or TRF.   The the...

To lose weight, should you count time or calories?

Can you lose weight without dieting?   Can you eat what you want and lose weight?   New year, new goals.   If one of your goals is to take off a few pounds, do you need to count calories, go on a diet, or just watch the clock?   There is a new weight-loss strategy called, “time-restricted feeding” or TRF.   Apparently, this TRF strategy is not only for weight loss but also to help prevent diabetes, lower your blood pressure and increase your longevity. Recent articles in the Wall Street Journal, “ A Diet Strategy That Counts Time, Not Calories ” and other publications outlines what this strategy is and how it works.    What is TRF?   (Time Restricted Feeding)? With TRF, you eat what you want but not when you want.   Your eating is limited to a 12-hour period of time each day.   So, if you eat your breakfast at 7 AM, you need to finish your dinner and evening snacks by 7 PM and then not eat again until your breakfast at 7 AM. ...

Low on Energy?

Many people ask me how they can have energy throughout the day. They say they feel tired and wonder if there is anything they can eat that will give them more energy. Food is how your body fuels its engines, the right food will give you more lasting energy. An interesting article appeared in the Weill Cornell Medical College newsletter called “Avoid the Energy Roller Coaster”. What hints do they offer to keep you energized throughout the day?               ADD TO YOUR DIET         1.  Complex Carbs – so many people are “avoiding carbs”. And yes, there are carbs you should avoid such as foods with refined carbs, the added sugar and white flour carbs. But many complex carbs will not only provide energy but more longer lasting energy. Whole grains – these complex carbs will re-fuel your engines, have fiber to fill you up and will provide more lasting energy than refined ca...
