Who doesn’t want to slow down the aging process? Are there foods you can eat to slow down Father Time?  WebMD has an article called, 7 anti-Aging Foods for Your Skin .   In this article, dietitian Kerri-Ann Jennings is quoted, “Everyone wants smooth, radiant skin.   What you eat can bring you closer to that goal.”    The Dietary Basics for Slowing the Aging Process: 1.       Eat foods full of nutrients, called nutrient dense foods, which pack in the vitamins and minerals your skin needs.   These include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and fish. 2.       Change it up.   Go for variety – lots of color, lots of different fruits and vegetables.   Each color delivers different antioxidants so mixing up colors means you are getting a lot of antioxidants which means a healthier you. Nutrition in the News: New Food Labels On Store Shelves

New Food Labels Now Appearing on Food Packages:   new food labels were proposed by the Food and Drug Administration with an implementation date of July 2018.   While this date has been postponed to allow manufacturers more time to comply, many manufacturers are already changing their food labels.   Look at the packages of food you eat for these new labels.   Some companies are early adopters including Nabisco, PepsiCo, and KIND.   So, you will see the new food labels on Wheat Thins, KIND bars, Lay’s Chips, Fritos and Cheetos.   What are some of the things to look for on these new food labels? Added Sugars –One of the most important changes is the addition of “added sugar” to the label.   Food labels already include “sugars” but this is of little value as the label didn’t tell you if the “sugars” were added or naturally present in the food.   For example, milk naturally has the sugar, lactose, in it.   So, “sugars” are listed on the...

5 steps to a healthier heart

What 5 things can you do for heart health?   A recent article on 5 Ways to Protect Your Heart Everyday gave some simple steps to follow:   Eat more fruits and vegetables – Fruits and vegetables are not only loaded with vitamins, minerals but also fiber and antioxidants.   Focus on color – each color has its own unique antioxidants and health benefits.   1 0,000 steps a day – if you haven’t invested in a pedometer than buy a Fitbit or other pedometer.   About 2,000 steps is a mile so 10,000 is about 5 miles give or take depending on your stride.   If 10,000 is too much to start with, then aim to start where you are whether it is 3,000 or 5,000 a day.   The start adding 500 steps a day for a week or two, then add another 500 steps a day until you can get to 10,000 steps a day.   Stop smoking and stay away from second hand smoke .    A handful of nuts – this is one of Dr. Oz’s recommendations and one I tell the students in my clas...
