Are you eating some nuts every day?   When teaching nutrition, I often told my students little habits like eating a handful of nuts a day, can be good for your health.   Some people think healthy eating is giving up things like sweets, chips.   But I emphasize adding healthy foods to your day.   It is easy to add a handful of nuts to your day.   In one nutrition class I was teaching, I was talking about eating some nuts every day.   I looked over and a student had a can full of nuts and was munching away on them.   This student could afford the calories in more than a handful of nuts and he always brought to class some nutritious snack.   This week both my sister and my daughter sent me some good articles on nuts and I thought it would be good to discuss how healthy nuts are.    What are some health benefits of eating nuts? There are so many ideas for boosting brain power but what works?   Are there foods you can add that will give your brain a boost?   Consumer Reports has an interesting article , Boost Your Brain Power at Any Age .   The article covers many brain boosters like games but what about food?   Are there foods that give your brain cells a boost?   What really works? As people age, they are concerned with dementia and Alzheimer’s and just plain forgetfulness.   A study in The Lancet found that there are 12 factors we can control that will reduce dementia risk by 40%.   These factors include staying physically active, avoid smoking, and reducing obesity which also reduces one’s risk of type 2 diabetes.    What foods promote better brain health? So many people think eating healthy means they need to cut some foods, especially desserts, out of their diet.   But I am a big advocate of adding healthier foods to your diet.   I like my desserts and I am not cutting them out of my diet.   But I also have a very healthy diet.   One can add some very simple healthy habits to their day and start to eat healthier.   One very easy way to eat healthier is to add a handful of nuts to your day.   Why a handful?   Because you don’t want to eat the entire can and a handful provides a lot of nutrients without piling on the calories.   I always tell the students in my class that Dr. Oz recommends a handful of nuts a day for good health. What is so healthy about eating some nuts every day?
