Nourish Your Mind: Eating for Better Brain Health and Memory

Have you ever heard of brain food?    Foods you can eat for a healthier brain.      Researchers have found that the food we eat greatly affects our brain health.    Besides the food we eat, staying hydrated also affects our cognitive function.   Why is hydration important for brain health?  I always told my students that before an exam they should drink some water.  Why?  Because even being slightly  dehydrated  affects cognitive function.  A 1% dehydration level can lead to “a 5% decrease in cognitive function”.   A 2% level of dehydration “can result in short term memory loss”, what some people call “brain fog”.  Besides drinking plain water, many beverages are good for hydration including 100% juice and cow’s milk.  (See:   What beverage is most effective for staying hydrated? ) What researchers have found about diet and brain health. Can you eat to improve your memory?   Apparently so.   A recent article in CommonHealth describes how one can eat to essentially clog up those brain pathways or how one can eat to unclog your brain and improve your memory.   Another article reviews 15 foods to eat for a healthy brain.   What food clog up your brain? We all know that eating high fat foods, especially those high in saturated fat, can clog up your arteries and are not good for your heart.   Another fat, trans fat, is especially bad as it builds up in our blood vessels and damages them.   So those French fries loaded with fat and foods high in saturated fat like bacon, are not only not good for your heart, they might not be good for your brain.
