Seems like everyone wants to jump on the latest trends in healthier food.    Many people are now choosing Chipotle over McDonald’s.    More of us are shunning artificial ingredients and artificial flavors in favor of real food.     So what is the Fast Food industry doing to get on the healthier bandwagon?   They are going to start removing artificial ingredients, preservatives and colorings from their food.   Who is doing what? Subway – I like Subway as one can get whole grain bread, lean meat and veggies on a sandwich.   They will be removing artificial colors, flavors and preservatives. Can you eat healthier fast food?

We have all heard fast food is bad for our health.   And mostly it is.   High in fat and high in calories.   But can you enjoy some fast food without it being a belly buster or clog our arteries?   Yes, you can enjoy fast food and eat fairly healthy if you make wiser choices.   Rule #1:   Skip the fried foods – I always tell my students, to avoid the fried foods.   So high in fat and calories. Rule #2 – Skip the sugary soda – opt for milk, juice or just a black cup of coffee. Nutrition has certainly been in the news recently.   Some topics that have been making the headlines: Added Sugar – the Dietary Guidelines for 2010 recommend all of us:   Reduce the intake of calories from added sugar.   Note it is ADDED sugar and not sugar.    Why?   Many foods such as fruits have the naturally occurring sugar, fructose.    No one is recommending we cut back on fruits because they contain fructose.   But we are to cut back on sugar that is added to foods like sucrose, high fructose corn syrup.
