Trying to lose weight?   So many people are looking for a quick weight loss diet.   Or, some people think they can somehow clean out their body with a cleanse diet.   Losing weight is good for your health but going on a quack diet is not so good for your health.   So many fad diets leave out food groups and nutrients your body needs.   Watching TV, I heard a newscaster say, “I am going on the Whole30 diet.   I do it every January.”    Sad for her as she is choosing to go on a diet ranked as one of the “Worst Diets” by U.S News & World Report.   Last week we talked about weight loss diets that will help you lose weight and are good for your health including:   Weight Watchers (WW) , the Flexitarian Diet and the Volumetrics Diet .   One doesn’t have to choose an unhealthy fad diet to lose weight.   But too many people want a quick fix and then choose diets that are actually bad for their health like the newscaster I heard ...

Many people are thinking about dropping a few pounds and are looking for a great weight loss diet.   Everywhere you look there are ads for quick weight loss diets or a diet pill that magically takes off weight easily.   Despite the claims, most of us know there is nothing easy about losing weight.   Yes, many diets will help you drop pounds quickly only to have those pounds return when you go off the diet.   What most people want is to lose weight and keep it off.   This requires more than a diet, but lifestyle changes like more exercise and more healthy foods.   To lose weight and keep it off, skip the fad diets and try some real diets that have been shown to work.   If you do want to drop a few pounds or more, what are some healthy weight loss diets?   Too many diets promise the world but are not good for your health.   For example, one of the diets ranked the worst is the Whole30 diet.   This, like so many fad diets, don’t work to hel...

Want to eat healthier in 2021?   What does “eating healthy” mean?   In the last two blogs we discussed simple changes you can make to start eating healthier.   If you want to follow a “diet” or eating plan for eating healthier, what are your options?   In the class I teach, students are always recommending we eat healthier diets.   But when I ask them what this means they often struggle to come up with specifics.   Instead of making a resolution to go on a “diet” this year, why not go on a “diet” to eat healthier?   Are there healthy diets to follow?   A diet not for weight loss or weight gain, but just a healthy eating pattern? Not a “diet” you go on for a week or two but a healthy eating pattern diet that you can go on all year long.    I was watching TV recently and saw the commercial for taking pills to get your fruit and veggies each day.   Rather than take pills, eat your fruit and veggies as a way to eat healthier in 2021. ...

Small steps to eating healthier in the new year

Last week we discussed how to set some SMART goals for 2021.   We noted some very simple and easy things you can do to eat healthier.   For example, eating a few baby carrots at lunch every day is good for your skin, good for your health.   In fact, WebMD has an entire article on Carrots .   To eat healthier doesn’t require going on a diet, giving up candy, desserts but focusing more on what foods you can add to your day for a healthier you.   Add more fruits and vegetables to your day .   Each semester the students in my class have to track everything they eat for a day.   It is amazing that the only “vegetable” some students eat is French fries from a Fast-Food establishment.   Many students have no fruit at all and no fresh vegetables.   Whatever your current intake of fruits and vegetables, set a goal to eat another serving every day.   a.        Breakfast – eat a banana for quick energy.  ...
